What is Truth?
A fascinating thing is stated by evangelist D.L.Moody (1837-1899) in his humble volume entitled "Notes in My Bible" (Fleming Revell Publishers).
He shows Jesus at the judgment porch of Pilate. Integrity meets expedience. The Man for the people stands accused before the man over the people. The latter cynically asks the question "What is truth?" (John 18:38)
His phrase was in the Latin:
QUID EST VERITAS?
Now re-arrange the letters of that sentence:
EST VIR QUI ADEST. "It is the man who is before you". The cynic does not know that he is condemned by his own words; that he has not the eyes to see Truth.
Yes, we are supposed to find the zenith of all that is compassionate, equitable, nurturing, stabilizing, wise and profitable in this man, Jesus, and in the example and power of His life, death and resurrection.
The prophet Isaiah summarizes it as follows:
Isaiah 32:1,2 - Behold,a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment. A man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.
What precious images these are to a desert people!
