Wings of a Hen

Just to nestle here
Neath your outstretched wings
And to leave a while
All the push and shove
For the fox is near
For disastrous things
And would kill the hen
And would quench the love.
But you take your place
Come what may you say
With your shelter calm
Not with tooth or claw.
And you shield me through
The tumultuous day
Though such harmlessness
Seems to some a flaw.

An Old Goat

He had become almost like a fixture at the Factory. Think of the compressor or the drinking water reservoir. Think of him. Big fellow and almost twenty-four years there.

He had once said to Management, "I figure that a balanced stable needs an old goat over in the corner to keep the spirited thoroughbreds in line." And so he had performed his duties, with many a conversation with newcomers.

Andreas was a recent and promising welder - young, Polish, trim, technically capable and shy because of language limitations. There had been conversations about daily routine, work attitude and Plant Safety. Andreas was watching the old boy with curiosity.

One day they bumped into each other after hours at a nearby coffee shop. Two cups later they found that they had gone through happily a number of interesting topics. Andreas itched to approach the compelling issue that came up every time he thought of the other man this past month:

"Sir, I hear you are man of faith. Jesus follower…

Ode to Joy

JOYFUL, joyful we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love,
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, hail Thee as the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.

All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heav'n reflect Thy rays,
Stars and agnels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise;
Field and forest, vale and moutain, flow'ry meadow, flashing sea,
Chanting birds and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art givind and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest,
Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest.
Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love are Thine;
Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the Joy Divine.

Mortals, join the mighty chorus which the morning stars began,
Father love is reigning o'er us, brother love binds man to man.
Ever singing, march we onward, vict…

Ye Know Not How

Jim Cymbala Senior Pastor at Brooklyn Tabernacle gives a wonderful testimony of unstructured prayer in the Assembly and a battle won.

The Church had given a stab at prayer meetings without formal teaching in services specially called. He and his wife Carol had come to the end of two and a half desperate years with a rebellious daughter fleeing the Church and any contact with Jesus or people of faith. The couple did not know where she was.

Early into one night of prayer a handwritten note was forwarded from a woman to the pastor. It said simply “I believe that the entire congregation is to go into prayer for the well-being of your daughter…and to do it now”. The writer signed her name.

Jim balked for a moment at the idea that the whole program should be turned over to Pastor’s particular problem. But he felt the Holy Spirit in it and he gulped and decided to give everyone more detail about his daughter. The room was respectful and silent, and quite rapidly a spirit of travail was rele…

This group has really moved my heart with Gospel power. A new selection and an old:

Think Of Nines

A strange phenomenon is observed in the scriptures. Many important Bible themes are associated with the number nine. The nine Beatitudes (Matthew 5). The nine fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5). The nine gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12).

A run-down of the books of the Bible also proves fascinating:

Genesis 9 – God’s rainbow covenant with Noah.

Numbers 9 – The providence and protection of the cloud by day and pillar of fire by night.

Deuteronomy 9 – The sum of Moses’ ministry.

Job 9 – The cry for a mediator/daysman betwen God and man.

Psalm 9 – The inevitability of judgment and recompense.

Proverbs 9 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Ecclesiastes 9 – The sum of Solomon’s experience with worldly delights.

Isaiah 9 – The prophecy of a child deliverer become King.

Jeremiah 9 - The sum of the weeping prophet’s lament.

Daniel 9 – The prayer of the greatest intercessor.

Amos 9 – Glorious restoration of spiritual Israel in a Golden Age.

Zechariah 9 – Jesus com…
